"What Alice Forgot" by Liane Moriarty

A decade of experiences, happy, sad, challenging, life-altering, life-ending, would change who you are, no? Things that happen to us - shape us and our outlook - our approach.

But what if you forgot a decade, misplaced it somehow, thought you and your life were ten years younger?  How would you act?

Liane Moriarty addresses these questions and more in her thought-provoking new novel that invariably begs her readers to contemplate who they have become, and why.  The most important question though, to me is --- are you proud of that person.

At age 39, the main character Alice Love, has an accident while exercising at her gym.  She hits her head, passes out and wakes up thinking she is 10 years younger, suffering from a severe case of amnesia. What a difference a decade can make.  Ten years earlier, Alice was over the moon in love with her new husband and expecting their first baby.

Presently, a decade later, she learns that they are divorcing.  Alice doesn't recognize herself, the qualities she's adopted over the years and how she interacts with people, including her family.

While some of this may sound trite and somewhat "it's been done already," Ms. Moriarty delivers an enticing story of what time can do, how it can change a person.

The author tacitly asks, "Who are you now, anyway?  And do you like who you have become?"

Kind of like a do-over. Anyway, to answer your question: yes, and yes. Though of course, we all can improve ourselves in one way or another.

Lost and Found

On vacation last week, my daughter was fully engrossed in her paperback.  She would take breaks from the dog-eared pages to cool off in the pool or swim in the waves, only to return to her lounge chair (and her book) with soggy, sandy fingers.  The book looked like it was on vacation too, with its crinkled pages sprinkled with sand. The Honeysuckle

One of my sisters said I should “blog” more often.  I take that as a compliment, even if she is related to me.  So I decided to write about the Honeysuckle. For almost three years, I've been conducting an ONLINE book discussion for the organization, Gotham City Networking, Inc.  (www.gothamnetworking.com).  It all started with the book "Water For Elephants" and author Sara Gruen.  We didn't start out thinking that the author would be involved.  It was your basic book club meeting with a twist: our group would read the book and meet online to discuss the novel virtually .  It was all set. I decided to try to contact Sara Gruen's publicist or agent (by email), to see if Ms. Gruen would care to provide a comment or quote for my summary of the book, the few paragraphs I had planned to use to kick off the discussion.  Within 30 minutes, Sara Gruen herself emailed me back indicating that instead of providing merely a quote, she would happily participate in our online book discussion.  Wow!  Really?!  And she did.
